Playing Cards

For this project, I was tasked with designing a custom set of playing cards with a theme of my choice. One of the first thoughts that came to mind was the Harry Potter houses matching the card suits (Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw matching with Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds and Spades). Since having to design all 52 playing cards would be very repetitive, I only had to design the aces, a face card (king, queen or jack), the joker and the back of the card.

Original Content

My idea for the parts I would use was to use the house crests for the aces and use an altered version of the mascot for the one face card I would choose. With the joker, I felt that it was usually unlike the rest of the cards in a regular deck and, as a result of this, I decided to choose the sorting hat as it was vaguely related to the houses. The back of the card doesn’t usually have much relation to the rest of the cards in a regular deck and tends to just be a symmetrical pattern.

Final Designs

The colours and backgrounds for each card were kept consistent with the house crests. The face card I chose to design was the king. To create the similar design used in a regular deck’s face fards, I copied and flipped the mascot for the Gryffindor house and erased any overlapping to create a line of symmetry. A similar thing was done for the sorting hat used for the joker. Overall, I really like how the designs came out, especially the king due to how much effort was needed to blend the two mirrored parts of the mascot together and how good the result turned out to be.
